This front room had originally been two rooms, each with a fireplace on the left hand wall. Some time in the 1950's the dividing wall was removed and the inglenook extended out to improve the proportions of the room. Unfortunately the remaining chimney-breasts and the very large chimney stack above were inadequately supported. So the chimney was falling into the house, compressing the remaining bit of wall which had been left between the two bedrooms above, and the middle of this ceiling was bowed down rather alarmingly.
